We were originally commissioned to prepare design drawings, as well as a planning application for the pier. This Grade II Listed structure had been considerably adapted and modified over time and the intention was to recreate some of the Victorian splendour of the original building by unravelling more recent accretions.
Since 2016, the project has grown to include more ambitious interventions, from a starling viewing platform to a sea slide. We are now on our 9th project at the pier.
The pier itself is incredibly iconic and a barometer of the economic success of Aberystwyth. The majority of its existing structure is still in situ, however due to a disrespectful approach to the conservation of this fine structure, a lot of the primary structure is hidden behind 20th century interventions. The project has been one of great exploration and investigation, and one which brings forward very unique challenges, given the extreme maritime environment in which the building is located.
