Cwm Jenkin was a rather tired old complex of barns in a splendid valley location just outside Knucklas in eastern Powys. The buildings are reached by a farm track and the site quite wonderfully isolated. As is usual with such simple agricultural buildings one side was open to the elements while the other hunkered down into the hill. Luckily in this case the side open to the elements also faced the view! In our experience this is not always the case with barn conversions.
The brief from the client was to retain as many of the original barn features externally while going for a very contemporary finish internally. Our client had a wonderful touch in fitting out the inside of the new 4 bedroom family house and we enjoyed collaborating with her in designing her own family home. We also partnered with an excellent builder with whom we had many ‘tool box talks’ as to how certain parts of the existing building, which were of poor structural integrity, could be rebuilt or saved.
The outcome is a fantastic family home that complements its rural setting while internally it is true to its age.
