Building designs that inspire and sustain future generations
Architectural design is about creating a structure and space that balances innovative and sustainable ideas with practical working and living environments.
We recently put that into practice as part of a UK-wide initiative to create the design for a new university campus in Hereford that will be home to more than 200 engineers of the future.
The New Model Institute for Technology and Engineering (NMite) will locate its new Centre for Advanced Timber Technology, Centre for Automated Manufacture, and Centre for Future Skills at a bespoke campus at its Skylon Park site in the city.
“We wanted to create a structure and environment that would encapsulate the vision of NMite as a university developing and nurturing engineers of the future,” said Tom Majski, Architectural Technologist at Hughes Architects who worked on the designs.
“Our building design demonstrates exemplar use of timber through an external portal frame allowing for flexible interior spaces and minimal impact from a complex phased programme.
“The external cladding design reflects the digital processing of the timber that will be pioneered by the facility.”
The design incorporated the use of sustainable timber and materials to create a range of spaces for educational needs while being capable of inspiring those learning and working within it.
NMite invited initial designs from architects throughout the UK as part of a competition to design the new campus. It stipulated the use of timber technology within the design.
The university is currently shortlisting its finalists before selecting a final design. We’re looking forward to seeing the range of ideas that will help shape and inspire NMite and future generations of engineers.
