Home About Us

Hughes Architects was founded in 2001 by Doug Hughes, our principal architect and managing director.

His objective was to provide a first-class architectural design and planning service for Mid Wales and the borders. The business soon expanded with design, planning and conservation commissions throughout Wales and England.

From our three offices at Newtown and Welshpool in Powys, and Aberystwyth in Ceredigion, we work with clients throughout Wales, the border areas of Shropshire and Herefordshire.

Our clients are always our primary concern, whether it’s the house owner extending their family home for the first time, to those that build again and again. There’s no such thing as ordinary with us at Hughes Architects. Our work includes homes and buildings, ranging from churches to health surgeries, schools to office developments. We work on conversions, extensions, renovations and listed buildings, as well as designing industrial and commercial units for expanding businesses.

As experienced planning consultants, we work with landowners and property developers promoting land for inclusion in development plans and assisting in land assembly packages.

We are also a lead adviser to local authorities and collaborate with Housing Association partners, identifying and co-partnering with them in developing often challenging sites. We engage with the local council planners, local community and parish councils, communities and government agencies in the early stages of your project. We can overcome concerns that can often delay projects. We get results. Our excellent success rate with the planning system is a testimony to that - 98% of our planning applications are approved.

Doug Hughes is registered with the Royal Institute of British Architects as a Conservation Architect.
