Wales and West Housing Association have worked in partnership with Powys County Council to address the pressing need for more elderly extra care accommodation in the county, and appointed us to develop a scheme for 48 extra care flats on the former Boys and Boden’s yard in Newtown. There were any challenges to overcome on the site before a successful design could be created, with contaminated ground to be cleared up, a heavily used road to be considered and a tight urban site.
Following close collaboration and discussion with the local authority, civic society, local councillors and local community a carefully considered design was created. The site is close to the Penygloddfa conservation area, so the forms of the large red brick town houses and former mills were important precedents. The design combines a rich red brick with more modern elements such as seamed metal cladding, render and large areas of glazing to create an inviting living environment.
