Having completed a fantastic replacement dwelling project at Severn View our client approached us to have a look at a redundant stone barn and detached former pigsty adjacent to the house.
The barn was developed to accommodate some annex space for guests, along with some built in flexibility to create a fantastic light airy studio space to the ground floor.
Following all of the ecological and structural surveys we were able to create a larger opening in the gable wall, this is a rare opportunity when working with barn conversions, but the structural integrity of the existing wall was questionable and presented us with a great opportunity to take full advantage of the far reaching views from this location and increase the natural light within the internal spaces. Something that was key to the success of the space for our client.
A small single storey extension was also introduced to the building to accommodate a new shower room and space for coats and boots.
The building was carefully designed to retain the character of the building whilst lining and insulating the walls to ensure the built envelope had a great level of thermal performance and would be economical to fuel.
The adjoin brick pigsty was carefully rebuilt and some large timber doors fitted to provide some all important storage at the property. So easily could buildings like this be demolished but the quality and character of a rural property can be embellished with a little thought and care finding new uses for buildings such as this
