The Forge

We were charged with transforming this 19th century blacksmiths house into a modern home. The property was large, but the blacksmiths workshop still made up 2/3 of the ground floor. We converted these spaces and added a new glazed oak frame to the rear to flood the house with light. Allied to this the whole house was refurbished, adding new oak doors, new windows and a new lighting scheme throughout.

Special features of the design include a carefully positioned dormer window to allow a view to Montgomery Castle, exposing the original timbers and two characters hidden amongst the roof! See if you can spot them.

“When I wanted to renovate my rather tired former blacksmiths forge I approached Hughes Architects for advice. Between us we came up with a layout that utilises the space and enhances the look of the property. They took care of the planning application and building regs and helped select the tradesmen to do the work. They kept an eye on the progress as the job went on helping to keep the whole process as painless as possible. We now enjoy a spacious, light and airy home that may never have come about if we hadn't appointed Hughes Architects”
